Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that mainly affects the skills involved in reading and writing.
It can make words appear to be dancing about the page, as well as cause patterns among letters and between lines.
Despite being referred to as a learning difficulty, there is no connection between dyslexia and intelligence. In fact, the majority of sufferers tend to be highly intelligent; they simply struggle with tasks that others may find simple, such as reading.
The exact cause of dyslexia remains a mystery; however, research into the condition has discovered that coloured ‘overlays’ (a sheet of clear, coloured plastic) or tinted lenses appear to help sufferers. They settle the background noise in the brain to enable someone with dyslexia to concentrate more easily when reading and writing.
Thanks to this discovery we’re now able to offer dyslexia sufferers a solution to their frustration. At Liphook Eye Care, we can help you or your child find the right coloured overlay to enable you to see words and letters without any hassle.
When you have your overlay assessment at Liphook Eye Care, you will be asked to read a paragraph of text using a different coloured overlay. There are a number of different coloured overlays, so don’t worry if the first one doesn’t work.
Tinted lenses can be fitted into any one of the frames we stock at our practice. You can now look forward to not only being able to read and write without any problems, but also looking stylish while you do so.
If you think you or your child may be suffering from dyslexia, please do not hesitate to book an appointment for an overlay assessment. Approximately 10% of the British population have the learning difficulty and we are here to help.
